The girl apparently stated that her father used the gun at home to shoot "monsters."

What did the cops find? A transparent, plastic toy gun that had been left by a relative.

This, in a supposedly "democratic" nation that is heir to the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights? The Conservative government in Canada recently abolished the national long-gun registry, but is seems that they've got a bit more work to do if they want to live up to their cultural legacy as a free people.
