Equities, commodities and other risky assets tumbled on Wednesday after U.S. elections left Washington, D.C. as sharply divided as before as the fiscal cliff looms large.

As of 3:20 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 278 points, or 2.1%, to 12968, the S&P 500 slid 30 points, or 2.1%, to 1399 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 67.8 points, or 2.3%, to 2944.
