U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton says that the Republican-held House must do more than prevent the worst excesses of liberal policy from the Obama Administration and the Democratic-held Senate.
The Arkansas Republican said at the2013 National Review Summit in Washington that the recently passed debt ceiling agreement was a win for spending restraint that the House can build upon. The agreement bought GOP House leadership time to offer a plan that balances the federal budget within 10 years and forces the Senate to pass a budget for the first time in nearly four years.
“We are in the opposition, and as a member of the opposition, we should take bold principles and campaign on them for the next two years,” he said. “It is something that the House should continue to do.”
Cotton drew top billing at the weekend event as a headliner along with prominent Republicans such as former vice presidential candidate House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
Cotton is a freshman member of the House, but he has already been mentioned as a potential challenger to vulnerable Arkansas Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor who could help win back the Senate for Republicans in 2014. The Iraq war veteran with two degrees from Harvard drew praise from the conservative watchdog group The Club for Growth during his run for Congress last year.
